Sigma 105mm f2.8 Macro
The Sigma 105mm macro is a long time favorite lens. It is extremely sharp (even wide open on full frame cameras) and reasonably priced (but not cheap) for a macro of this length. It has good build quality, 1:1 macro magnification and very reasonable size.
There are two versions, the older, "EX" and thew newer, "EX DG". The EX indicates Sigma's high quality range of lenses. The DG tells us the lens has been updated for digital cameras. Essentially it includes a new lens coating designed to reduce reflections off of the sensor. There is little difference between them and personally I would not favor one over the other.
It is available in a variety of mounts:
Sigma 105mm for Nikon
Sigma 105mm for Canon
Sigma 105mm for Sony/Minolta
Pentax
FourThirds
