The 105mm is a long time favorite lens. It is extremely sharp (even wide open on full frame cameras) and reasonably priced (but not cheap) for a of this length. It has good build quality, 1:1 magnification and very reasonable size.

There are two versions, the older, "EX" and thew newer, "EX DG". The EX indicates 's high quality range of lenses. The DG tells us the lens has been updated for digital cameras. Essentially it includes a new lens coating designed to reduce reflections off of the sensor. There is little difference between them and personally I would not favor one over the other.
