The 283 is a very popular older flash. It has gained fame as an affordable alternative to modern flashes. Zillions of these flashes were sold from the mid-70's on, so there are lots of 283's are available on the used market. Due to this new demand prices have shot up, but it is still quite affordable given its quality (expect to pay $25-50).
